This is one of the hardest questions to answer. In short… it depends.
Some clients go to therapy for years, while others go to therapy for a short period of time. Neither one is better, but rather depends on what it is you are going to therapy for and the different types of therapy. For example, trauma therapy can be one of the longest therapies, but CBT therapy is typically s shorter time-based therapy.
Additionally, it is important to remember how therapy fits around your life. The most typical way to attend therapy is once a week. However, especially if we are finding it difficult to manage, we may go to therapy twice a week, or, to adapt to work schedules, others may go to therapy every other week or once a month. Your frequency of therapy will also depend on your therapist.
At the end of the day, it’s still your choice to decide how long you want to go to therapy for. The end of a cycle of therapy is usually when you feel more able to manage on your own or that you feel you have resolved or achieved your goals. Other times, it can also be due to your personal circumstances changing. In any cases, therapists are usually happy to welcome you back in future, should you wish to return.
